Africa Does Not Need to Copy the World. It Needs to Build on its Own Strengths

Africa Does Not Need to Copy the World. It Needs to Build on Its Own Strengths.

For decades, conversations about Africa’s development have often revolved around one familiar question:

How can Africa catch up with the rest of the world?

I believe it is time to ask a more important question:

What kind of development model should Africa build for itself?

Africa does not lack potential. It possesses abundant natural resources, a young and ambitious population, entrepreneurial energy, expanding markets and, above all, people determined to build a better future.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is a powerful reflection of this potential. Its mineral wealth is globally significant, but the greater opportunity lies in what can be built around that wealth: local industries, manufacturing capabilities, skilled talent, stronger infrastructure, entrepreneurship, employment and thriving communities.

Unlocking this opportunity requires a different mindset from businesses operating across the continent.

We cannot simply import business models designed for other economies and expect them to succeed without adaptation. We must understand local realities, strengthen domestic capabilities, develop African talent, support local supply chains and invest with a long-term perspective.

Technology must be used to solve African challenges. Businesses must be designed to create value within the economies and communities in which they operate.

At PREMIDIS S.A.R.L., our journey in the DRC has reinforced my belief that localisation should never mean compromising on global standards.

Africa can combine international standards of governance, quality and efficiency with solutions built around its own markets, realities and aspirations.

That is the opportunity before us.

Africa does not need to become a version of somewhere else.

It has the potential to build its own model of enterprise: globally competitive, locally rooted, economically productive and socially meaningful.

The future of African business should not be measured by how successfully we replicate what has already been built elsewhere.

It should be defined by what we have the vision, confidence and courage to build here.
