Imagine opening a packet of biscuits and finding them crisp, or pouring a drink from a can that has protected its contents during storage and transport. Behind this everyday convenience is a material with some remarkable properties: aluminium.
Did you know, aluminum foil has improved our everyday lives since the early 1900s. Lightweight, malleable and easy to shape, aluminium can be formed into cans, trays, foil and packaging layers. Its excellent barrier properties help block light, oxygen, moisture and bacteria protecting food quality, flavour and freshness. It also withstands a range of processing temperatures and can be recycled.
But perhaps its most remarkable feature is how thin it can be. Aluminium foil can measure just 0.006 millimetres (6 microns) thinner than a human hair, while still providing an effective barrier against external elements.
From beverage cans to foil-lined cartons, aluminium helps bring convenience and protection to everyday food packaging.
